Course curriculum

Sometimes we as farriers are asked to shorten the toe and increase the caudal support, either as a bar- or eggbar-shoe. How will this change the load pattern on the distal limb? There are many biomechanical studies today trying to assess the effect of orthopedic shoes on horses doing kinetic studies on hard and soft ground. In this lecture we go through the change in pressure point of different shoes in dorsal-palmar direction: open heel, bar, eggbar, wide toe, etc. Medial-lateral imbalance/balance will also be addressed.
